The 0870 app - make cheaper phone calls from your iPhone
The free UK iPhone app called ‘0870’ tries to help you find alternate cheaper phone numbers to the expensive 08** numbers These 08** numbers are charged 35p per minute over the normal calling charge that the callers have to pay while calling other normal landline numbers. It does not work every time as in some cases there is not an alternative number. It is very easy to use. You just launch the app and type in you 08** number and it searches its database. If it finds a different cheaper number it will ask if you want to dial it. You just click the OK button.

It took 429 days to be approved because O2 and British Telecom feared that this iPhone app would eat into their revenues. The freelance developer of the app, Simon Maddox took the issue with Apple. After a lot of discussions between Maddox and Apple and between Apple and O2, the go-ahead was finally given. Apple has had a number of issues in the past with telephone companies trying to dictate the terms on which iPhone apps can be approved and which cannot. This time the public won. In the two examples shown below some times it works and sometimes it doesn't.
