Torch - a Flashlight app
The free Torch or Flashlight application for the iphone is so useful. I always have my iPhone on me and very rarely carry a flashlight. If I drop my keys at night or want to move around my house without putting on the lights and waking people up it is great. The light is soft and not dazzling. It is not meant to shine and light up the other side of the road at night. It’s range is just meant for a few feet which is normally all I want.

I have also used it to flag down an ambulance whilst walking the dog at night. I came across a skinny teenager. She had drunk too much and collapsed on a park bench. I used the phone to call the emergency services and as I was someway from the road the torch app came in very handy. I used it as a flashlight to get the ambulance crew’s attention.

When you load up the app you get a picture of a torch. Just touch it and the screen turns white. It is that simple. There are a number of different Torch apps available on the Apple iTunes apps store. Search for them using the word ‘torch’ or the American version ‘flashlight’. Some have extra functions like changing the colour of the light from white to blue, green, red or orange. These could be handy if you are doing some drag racing. Some of the apps you can set to flash different colours. Flashing red or orange lights could be good if your car breaks down. In the UK it is illegal to us a flashing blue light. You will get arrested for impersonating a police officer. I have just opted for a simple iPhone Torch application. One that when I turn it on just gives out a continuous white light.
